POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Associate Director, Otter Student Union (OSU), and the overall general direction of the OSU Board of Directors, the AV/Technical Services Coordinator is responsible for all audio-visual and technical aspects in OSU facilities and OSU supported events hosted in non-OSU campus facilities, including maintenance, repairs, and operation of equipment. This includes hiring, training, and supervising student technical staff and working with internal/external clients on technical capabilities and providing exceptional customer service to users. The AV/Technical Services Coordinator will require minimal creative and technical direction.

Examples of Duties


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include. but are not limited to. the following:
  • Provide audio-visual and technical support for meetings and events; provide backup support for student staff, including assisting with troubleshooting calls. (45%)
  • Maintain audio visual and technology based equipment for day-to-day and specialized programming needs for the Student Center, Black Box Cabaret, and programs supported by the OSU held outside of these spaces; and provide ongoing training and assistance to student staff responsible for providing operational technical support. (20%)
  • Consult with student organizations, faculty, staff, departments, and external users on logistical and audio/visual capabilities for meetings, events, and programs; negotiate with presenters, performers/agents, sound engineers and lighting directors to meet performance and event needs within the capabilities and limitations of OSU; and ensure all technical operations and services are executed in accordance with high customer service standards. (20%)
  • Facilitate equipment preventative maintenance; develop and maintain audiovisual equipment inventory; research new equipment; follow technology industry developments; create proposals for equipment and facility upgrades; and recommend appropriate purchases, based on trends and best practices in student unions and higher education. (10%)
  • Assist with the development of the budget as it relates to audiovisual, technical support and staffing needs. (5%)


OTHER FUNCTIONS
  1. Performs other duties as assigned.
  2. Working Hours: This position will require evening and weekend hours as needed to ensure audio-visual and technical systems are maintained and all OSU supported events are staffed.
  3. Actively participates in department meetings, training programs, collaborations, retreats and planning sessions.
  4. Attends seminars and conferences to maintain program and professional development. Promotes and maintains an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service. Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of performing arts, theater, audio/sound, stage lighting, music/concerts and dance; safety requirements and standards; working knowledge of video, projections and multimedia, stage and set design; basic electrical theory and usage related to performing arts and knowledge of event and lecture operations.

Skills: Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with individuals at all levels within the organization.

Ability to: independently manage production support projects and productions; work on more complex projects/designs and with more difficult materials and equipment, including the ability to select and use the most appropriate materials to meet production needs; train, schedule, supervise and evaluate student technical staff; train others in safety measures and ensure compliance with codes and regulations; analysis and prepare backline for performances; operate and troubleshoot conference room equipment and lighting and audio systems; remain calm under pressure and multi-task in a fast paced environment; and communicate in a professional and effective manner - in both written and oral forms - with campus employees, students, vendors, producers, performers and promoters, and the public.

Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: The equivalent of three (3) years progressively responsible professional experience in Technical Theater, Student Center/Union Operations, Conference and Event Services, or other related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Technical fluency with word processing, Google mail and calendaring programs, and 25Live scheduling software; technical fluency with lighting control systems, audio systems, rigging knowledge and experience, projection and power point operation, and stage production equipment general operation and troubleshooting ability; experience with contract riders and coordination with production companies. Knowledge and understanding of the role of a Student Union.

The hourly hiring range for this position is $25.88 - $28.36. Classification: Grade 2, Staff. This is a non-exempt position and as such is eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
